“When I was an undergraduate, I regret that I did not believe that the UK would have a female prime minister within my lifetime; much less did I imagine that by now we would be boasting our second.

International Women’s Day is a great chance to celebrate the historic advances of women’s rights.

As our distinguished graduate, Muhtar Kent, CEO of Coca-Cola, said: “The post-American world won't be China ... or India ... or Brazil - or any nation for that matter. The real drivers will be women.

“Women entrepreneurs, women business, political, academic and cultural leaders - and women innovators. The truth is that women already are the most dynamic and fastest-growing economic force in the world today.”

Vast strides have already been made in achieving diversity and equality. In 1920, 1,212 women were awarded degrees. Today, that figure stands at almost 200,000 with women making up the majority of graduates. A truly powerful indication of how far we have come. Yet, there is always more that can be achieved.

The UK is rightly proud of our emancipation of women. University is a special place and a special time in life. It draws together women from vastly different cultures, social backgrounds and religions and enables each of them to take what is a very personal journey, together. I am proud to be the first female Chancellor at the University of Hull.

This message is for everybody, both at the University and beyond; by using social media positively, our digital world joins people together whatever their journey. I think International Women’s Day captures this brilliantly, by facilitating a conversation that everyone can join.

The theme for International Women’s Day for 2017 is ‘Be Bold for Change’ – and in a world that is changing at an alarmingly rapid rate, there has never been a better time to harness this momentum using your courage and tenacity, wherever you live or whatever you do.”
